O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL
[5:30] 2/1-2/1-2/1-2/1, 4-3-3-1, timp+4, hp, cel, SATB chorus, strings
Commissioned by the First Presbyterian Church of Davenport, IA.
A very unusual treatment of the familiar carol. It begins with an extremely quiet, mysterioso opening in Latin as the chorus pleads for the coming of Emmanuel ("Veni Emmanuel"). The darkness gives way to light, first in a glorious way, then going into a dancelike triple-meter fantasia. Finally the piece concludes with a grand presentation of the tune and a coda of alleluias.
NOTE: The beginning of this recording is very, very quiet!
