The little-known 19th-century tune "Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy" (Seraphic Minstrels) proves to be a worthy complement to the familiar "Joy to the World" in this showpiece for chorus and orchestra, with musical figures from both pieces found in abundance throughout the work. A solo trumpet initiates the brassy introduction, and the chorus provides a contrapuntal treatment of the first tune, with orchestral interjections. "Joy to the World" receives a very rhythmic treatment in its first appearance, and various orchestral colors shade a syncopated instrumental interlude suitable for dance. A final grand verse of "Joy to the World" leads to a triumphant and exciting conclusion.
