MY DANCING DAY, ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT
[5:30] 2/1*-2/1-2/1-2/1, 4-3-3-1, timp+4, hp, cel, Children's Choir (opt.), SATB Chorus, strings. Piano/vocal score is published and can be purchased here.
Commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Suitable as a first half or concert closer.
This is a Celtic-influenced fantasia setting of familiar English and Welsh carols including "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" and "On Christmas Night" in full treatment with fragments of several other carols ("In dulci jubilo," "What Child Is This," "I Saw Three Ships," "Masters in This Hall," and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"). The flashy Riverdance-like percussion in the final section leads to a wonderfully powerful and rhythmic conclusion.
