It is a flashy and virtuosic arrangement designed to function as a short and extremely energetic orchestra feature (much like the "Trepak" from The Nutcracker). This arrangement juxtaposes the excitement of the shepherd girls with the serenity of the Virgin Mother and the newborn King in the manger.
